Session #89 · 1965–67

Speech #890206102

I twice requested that our State Department intercede on behalf of Archbishop John P. Cody of Chicago and other Catholic clergy who wished to make the pilgrimage to Poland for the commemoration of Polands millennium. When the Polish Government persisted in delaying and then denying such visas I wired the State Department. asking them to protest strongly against this dictatorial policy of the Gomulka regime. Americans pay particular attention on this day in this year to the plight and promise of Poland. because we. too. believe in the power of ideas to change the course of history. We believe the idea of freedom will prevail over police power.
