This is the history of Israels present effort to meet its own revolution of economic equality. Unlike our own. Israels revolution does not come from a group of neglected. downtrodden or enslaved citizens. Rather. it is a result of the state itself--of the creation of a Jewish homeland whose doors are open to any Jew asking sanctuary. Since Israel became independent. some oneandaquarter million immigrants have entered the country1 /2 times the population of the state in 1948. Arriving without means or skills. these people had to be absorbed into the economy. They needed the opportunity to work. to assert themselves as heads of their families and to find a place in the new community.
