Senator DANIEL K. INOUYE pointed out that Hawaii has one of the most polyglot populations on earth. its people having come from every corner of the globe. There were then some 69.000 Immigrants in Hawaii coming from about 70 countriesfrom nearly every nation in Europe. the Western Hemisphere. Asia. and Oceania. Nearly fourfifths of the migrants came from Japan25.000and the Philippines--29.000. In the last 100 years. beginning with the time when the island population was 63.000. and 91 percent were pure Hawaiians. the total population has grown to more than 700.000. while the ethnic composition has been completely reversed. One writer has said that it "has turned completely upside down." Now only 1.7 percent of the islanders are pure Hawaiian. some 15 percent part Hawaiian. Caucasians. or haoles. as they are called on the islands. constitute about onethird of the total population. Approximately twothirds are of Asiatic origin. and of these. half are Japanese. No other State has a percentage of population anything near as high. California. the next State. has only 2.2 percent.
