Session #89 · 1965–67

Speech #890187813

The 1959 elections were a third sign. Fourth. the 900.000 Vietnamese who marched down from the north to the south after 1954. Fifth. the 700.000 Montagnards and others. many of whomperhaps as many as 100.000are now refugees from the Vietcong. I could go on by saying that in my own personal experience. and Ive been in Vietnam half a dozen times in the last 10 years. the villagers who have some degree of protection remain loyal to Saigonor at least remain within the orbit of Saigoneven though villagers in Asia generally look upon a central government as one of the "five evils." And I add that if we are successful in Vietnam. fence sitting will diminish among the other Asian nations. Some of the latent support that we have had and have frequently dissipated will be won back.
