Session #89 · 1965–67

Speech #890180235

I hope that when Secretary McNamara comes before the Foreign Relations Committee next week. he will be prepared to bring with him a meaningful map. and I would hope it would be unclassified. But even if he insists on classifying it. on the ground that this might give aid and comfort to the enemy because it would show them that we know where they are. at least he might let us have a classified map. so some of us on the committee can have some real understanding of what the military situation in Vietnam is with respect to the holding of real estate. If you do not hold the real estate. how can you go through with a social and economic programthat is anything more than a rescue operation for refugees and the dwellers in a few overcrowded cities?
