During World War II. Lithuania suffered occupation by both Soviet Communists and Nazis. Following World War II. an oppressive and imperalistic Soviet Union reoccupied Lithuania. and subsequently made Lithuania a republic of the Soviet socialist state. The repressive means available to 20th century totalitarian regimes in order to crush recalcitrant peoples are far superior to those possessed by their 19th century predecessors. Lithuanian attempts to resist absorption by the Soviet Union have been ruthlessly suppressed. with thousands deported. and many thousands more killed. Suppression has taken time. however. And it was only recently that Lithuanian freedom forces were compelled to abandon active resistance.
