MexicanAmericans could not point to a comprehensive analysis of their problems comparable to Gunnar Myrdals "An American Dilemma." At about the same time. an academic group at the University of California. Los Angeles. began to explore the MexicanAmerican population and its problems. This group was led by Dr. Leo Grebler. a wellknown economist and professor at the UCLA Graduate School of Business Administration. Professor Grebler himself is an immigrant and a refugee from the savagery of of Nazi Germany. His work with census data and his extensive research in urbail economics made him curious about gaps in the data. and about the appalling differences between widely held stereotyped views of MexicanAmericans and the real facts.
