Speech #890168118

In an interview with Charles A. Ware. of the Honolulu Advertiser. Captain Sagum revealed that one of the reasons he chose police work as a career in 1932 was to "help my peoplethe Filipino people." He felt that immigrants from the Philippines. who belong to one of the last ethnic groups to arrive in Hawaii. frequently got into "trouble" because of cultural and language barriers. The son of a Filipino immigrant himself. Captain Sagum felt that with his fluent command of Tagalog he would be able to help bridge the gap between this ethnic group and the community at large. Captain Sagum is truly a credit not only to the Honolulu Police Department. but to all Hawaii as well.
