Speech #890166607

Monsignor OGrady became a founder of the National Catholic School of Social Work. in the Catholic University of America. and served as dean of that school from 1934 to 1938. Monsignor OGradys was an effective voice in contributing to the study of legislation in social matters. since he combined the scholars mastery of details with the executives grasp of essentials. In housing. in social security. in employment of the physically handicapped. in nondiscrimination in employment. in immigration policies. in the resettlement of displaced persons. in the community approach to social welfare programs. Monsignor OGrady has been a major contributor in the making of laws and in the establishment of government policy. We who come of Irish stock take particular pride in the fact that Monsignor OGrady was one of the great number of fine priests that have been contributed to America by Ireland. He was born in County Clare and ordained in Dublin. at his death he was survived by a brother living in County Clare. and a sister in Limerick. Monsignor OGradys concerns and activities went beyond the borders of this country. not only in matters of the resettlement of refugees. and the liberalization of immigration laws. but in the farflung benefactions of War Relief Services (later named Catholic Relief Services) of which he was vice president. and in his service as Consultant to the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. In this capacity. he visited Africa to work on community development projects. and in 1959 he was cited by Pope John XXIII for his contributions to the welfare of Africa through this work. The Most Reverend Patrick A.
