Session #89 · 1965–67

Speech #890162294

Speaker. under leave to extend my remarks in the RECORD. I include the following report to my constituents on the activities of the 89th Congress. 1st session: DEAR FRIEND: The 89th Congress. having just completed its first session. has been widely praised by many. including the New York Times. which has termed it "the best Congress since World War II." The major legislation passed by this Congress has been developing for over two decades and its farreaching effects will benefit every family in our district. Federal expenditures in education. social security. medicare. immigration. veterans benefits. and voting rights are but a few of the measures enacted by a Congress that was no longer hampered by obstructionist rules and a rigid seniority system. I have supported and in some instances coauthored much of this legislation. I have also exercised my right to disapprove those administration policies that I believed were not in the best interest of good fiscal government or in the best interest of my constituents.
