But this grant of a quota would enable that country to go into the sugar business just as the bill authorizes the Bahamas to produce and sell sugar. I believe it is correct. as our chairman has stated. that had this grant not been made to the Bahamas. it would be the only sugar exporting country in the Western Hemisphere that did not have an American quota. and yet Bahama is. with the single exception of Mexico. closer to the United States than any other sugarproducing country. If these people lose their only source of employment do you think they wil stay there and starve or will they take advantage of the new Immigration Act. which I believe the gentleman supported. and move 90 miles to the U.S. mainland and draw U.S. relief. After all what is wrong from our viewpoint with giving a quota where it will help the United States?
