Peter Chew. writing in the May 17. 1965. edition of the National Observer. told of his conversation with a "highranking Western diplomat." as follows: Many of the rebels. he said. sought visas from him in the past in order to make their way to Cuba and Iron Curtain countries. and he had refused to grant them. They had managed to get out anyway. The Western diplomat. who fought as a highranking officer in the Second World War. said many of the street fighters of the rebel side had shown evidence of the most sophisticated urban guerrilla warfare training.
