Session #89 · 1965–67

Speech #890139685

If any one of us had written the bill by himself. he would have some changes in it. But we have a situation in which we have given and taken and adjusted our views in order to get a bill. I honestly believe the bill in its present form as it went from the subcommittee to the full committee and as it has come from the full committee to the Senate is the very best bill obtainable at this time on this very emotional and crucial subject. the subject of immigration. As I said the other day. the junior Senator from Massachusetts . the junior Senator from Michigan . the senior Senator from New York . and the minority leader. all of whom are now in the Chamber. and other members of the subcommittee and the full committee made most significant and substantial contributions to the presentation to the Senate of a bill which. as I said a moment ago. represents the very finest bill attainable at the present time on this subject.
