Speech #890138283

Secretary of Labor Wirtz testified before the committee that the pending bill would increase the opportunities for workers with needed abilities to come into this country. The Secretary pointed outthis is under our present law. Mr. President. and I emphasize how generous it isthat during the 195261 period. some 14.000 immigrant physicians and surgeons and about 28.000 nurses helped alleviate the shortage of trained personnel in the critical medical field. I do not know of any countries which have less need for skilled doctors and nurses than we have. They can do as great a service for humanityprobably greater. and with greater opportunities to serve humanityin their own countries. where the need is greater.
