The company started the nursery school at the State teachers college and financed part of its operations. The requirement that some of the children in the school come from the area served by the settlement house made it something of a forerunner of the valuable Operation Head Start program. The Milwaukee child care centers were supported by the company. and Americanization and English classes were financed from 1901 to 1920 and again when refugees were fleeing from Hitler. It includes aid for the training and rehabilitation of the unskilled and the homebound. scholarships to aid needy students. and equipment for technical and vocational schools.
