He started the first sawmill in Lake County at Lake Zurich in Ela Township in 1843. The Federal Census of 1850 found the population to be 988. but the settlers continued to come to develop the rich farmlands. Came the Civil War and many of the young men of the area joined the Union Army. Following the Chicago fire of 1871. many refugees from the city journeyed to Ela Township to begin their lives again. The village of Lake Zurich was incorporated in 1896 and remains the patriarch of Ela Township. The youngest village is Kildeer. born March 22. 1858. with 59 inhabitants.
