But the Soviet Union could not rest content with this. She was determined to break down any will to resistance. and any perpetuation of Lithuanian national traditions. Thus deportations of Lithuanian intellectuals. professionals. and so forth. commenced at once. but they reached their peak a year after the Soviet occupation. when on June 15. 1941. over 30.000 individuals were deported to Siberia. Shortly thereafter the Germans declared war on their Soviet allies. and they quickly occupied Lithuania. Three years later the Soviets were back. and this time their deportations were to be even more ferocious. Ever since. Lithuania has been part of the Red empire. and the Russians have been trying to convince the rest of the world that this is the way the Lithuanians want it.
