Session #89 · 1965–67

Speech #890069005

Unfortunately. in 1940 these three republics were again menaced by a totalitarian monster. In the middle of 1940 they were occupied by the Red army. deprived of their independence. and then made part of the Soviet Union. Over 60.000 Estonians. 34.000 Latvians. and 45.000 Lithuanians were either executed or arrested and forcefully deported from their homelands to distant corners of the Soviet Union on the charge that they were "politically unreliable." This happened 25 years ago. and today the kinsmen of these peoples all over the free world are observing the anniversary of thissad event. We have denounced this crime of aggression. We have never recognized the forceful incorporation of these three countries by the U.S.S.R.
