Session #89 · 1965–67

Speech #890034230

I come from a State which has had many years of experience with the problem of bringing in cheap labor from abroad to work on its farms. The State of Hawaii learned long ago that eventually it would have to rely on local labor. adequately paid and decently treated. to fill its needs. Today the plantation fieldworker in Hawaii earns $24.10 a day. including fringe benefits. Contract labor Is a thing of the past. Workers from Japan and the Philippines pass through Honolulu on their way to work on farms in California. but not on our plantations in Hawaii. We have sufficient labor. permanently resident in our State. to do our farmwork.
