Speech #880297400

President. at the time of his death the late great President. John F. Kennedy. was at work on revising a booklet on immigration which he had published in 1958. He hoped this would further familiarize Americans with the tremendous role that immigrants have played in our Nations history. We should never lose sight of the fact that all of us are descendants of immigrants who came to these shores seeking freedom and a better way of life. My grandmother was born in the "old country." She came to this country in 1848. following the revolution in Germany. She had a shawl on her head and a bundle under her arm with her few worldly possessions. but she had the love of liberty in her heart.
