Session #88 · 1963–65

Speech #880289191

Richard F. Smith. of the American Friends Service Committee. and the Reverend John W. Schauer. director of Immigration Services for Church World Service. Similar information has come to me from Dr. Ralph J. Danhof. stated clerk of the Christian Reformed Church. The earlier resettlement program for DutchIndonesian refugees is one of the most effective on record. The programs success is a tribute to the fine qualities of the refugees. and to the men and women who directed the splendid efforts of Americas voluntary agencies. religious bodies and civic organizations. Experience would indicate. Mr. President. that the bill I offer today has considerable merit from the standpoint of all concerned. including that of the interested governments. but especially the refugees. who count many relatives and friends among our citizens. I sincerely hope that Congress will act favorably on this bill. Parenthetically.
