It is a particularly sad week for those Americans born in the Baltic States of Estonia. Lithuania. and Latvia. For during this week. 24 years ago. the Soviet Union. in violation of solemn treaties. occupied the three small defenseless Baltic States and embarked upon an orgy of wholesale murder and mass deportations which can only be described by the term "genocide." The perfidy which characterized the Soviet occupation of the Baltic States is something that the free world would do well to remember. In the case of Lithuania. the Kremlin delivered an ultimatum at 11 p.m. on June 14 demanding a complete change in the Lithuanian Government. the arrest of the Minister of the Interior and other Government officials. and permission for an unlimited number of troops to enter Lithuania. The deadline was set for 8 a.m..
