Stonewall Jackson was born and reared in a simple home in an area of Virginia. known in the Revolutionary period as West Augusta. which extended throughout West Virginia and Kentucky to the Mississippi River. That section of Virginia was settled primarily by ScotchIrish immigrants of the Presbyterian faith who had come to Virginia in search of religious. political. and economic freedom.
