His compassion. humanity. and integrity earned him a degree of esteem and affection which few in public life are privileged to enjoy. His life was marked by a long record of remarkable achievements. Perhaps he will be most remembered as the voice of liberalism in the Senate during the hysteria of the 1950s. A courageous fighter for civil rights. civil liberties. and a fair and just immigration policy. he was rightly known as the conscience of the Senate. After his retirement from the Senate. his deep concern for the welfare of New York motivated Herbert H. Lehman. at the age of 80. to lead the cause of political decency and reform within the Democratic Party.
