As a result of their insurrection of 1905. Latvia was granted limited representation in the Imperial Russian Duma. which. in the persons of Janis Zalitis and Janis Goldmanis had profound influence on the history of Latvian liberation. The Latvians were hard hit by the invasion of the Gelman Army in 1915 with over 400.000 Latvians forced to become refugees in Russia. The braveLatvian troops held the Riga front against German forces for 2 years until the Russian revolution of 1917. Realizing that their independence was endangered by the 1917 Russian revolution. the Latvian National Council announced Latvias separation from Bolshevik Russia on January 5. 1918.
