Session #88 · 1963–65

Speech #880110507

I have not been lobbied at great length either for or against the legislation. I do not regard the legitimate communications from the people I represent as lobbying in any sense of the word. And I wanted to say to the gentleman from Rhode Island who dwelt here on the use of this labor in cotton that cotton is one of the smallest users of the migrant worker in California. that the great majority of the workers are engaged in the harvesting or working on crops of tomatoes. lemons. oranges. asparagus. lettuce. and other truck crops. They are the crops that are not supported. They are the specialty crops and they are paying in the great majority of instances wage levels in excess of the national minimums prescribed for industrial employment.
