It opened. on a free nonsectarian basis. the first American hospitals specializing in chest and arthritic diseases. It sponsored orphanages and homes for the aged. free employment bureaus and technical training schools for immigrants. It established. in 1852. the first Jewish community center in our country and the first Jewish library. Bnai Brith is widely known for its effective campaigns against religious bias and discrimination.
