Enrico Caruso. the grand opera tenor from Naples. spent the last 20 years of his life making the air of America beautiful with his singingand also contributing great sums of money to the Allied cause in World War I. Luigi Palma di Cesnola. of Rivarolo. came to the United States in 1860. founded a military school for officers and then enlisted and fought through the Civil War. As a naturalized American he became American consul to Cyprus. and later director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Louis Amateis of Turin came to America in 1883 and did outstanding work as university professor. architect and sculptor. Nor can we omit such scientists as Enrico Fermi. who made possible the use of atomic power.
