Session #88 · 1963–65

Speech #880088793

I am sure. for my colleague from Kentucky . and also for our colleagues in the other body who come from Kentucky. We are frequently asked to have physicians deferred from military service. or discharged from the armed services. if they will agree to return to one of the small communities. We are asked to have the visas of some of the exchange professional people in the field of medicine. osteopathy. and dentistry extended. In my State. unlike the situation which the Senator from Iowa stated obtains in his State. the small towns cannot. notwithstanding the fact that a clinic may be furnished. obtain enough doctors. because they go to other areas. In many of the towns or county seats in what we call the "pauper" counties half the people are on relief today.
