Session #88 · 1963–65

Speech #880082229

The source of this data is the 1963 Presidents Manpower Report. From table V figures I have prepared a chart which I refer to as chart 4 showing graphically what I have just introduced. Since only an extremely small number of immigrants who are unskilled workers are admitted annually. immigration has only a minimal effect. if at all. on unemployment. Although our knowledge of the causes underlying the rising trend of unemployment is as yet imperfect. it has been increasingly clear that labor has been displaced largely by advances in technology and the striking gains in manhour productivity. It has been estimated that about 1.8 million jobs are affected each year by technological change. and that approximately 18 million jobs will be affected in the decade 196070see population bulletin.
