Session #88 · 1963–65

Speech #880079345

If It is so "bad." why would a million Mexican men climb barbed wire fences and swim rivers to earn onehalf the wages we pay in California? This is the first time in the history of mankind that slaves behaved in this manner. You said "underpaid." Rowcrop labor skills are among the lowest. I challenge any other industry to show that they pay higher wages for similar skills. Your remarks are easy to perpetrate. but impossible to verify. You referred to underemployed American migrant labor. There may be unemployment in Kentucky or the big city slums. but none on the farms of California. Anyone who wants a job can have one now at a wage higher than he can earn in any other industry.
