Speech #880073541

Mr. Speaker. last week. I was astounded to hear that some kinds of work are "cruel. undesirable. unAmerican." I was even more amazed to hear that any kind of migranteven a Congressman or baseball playershould be relieved of the necessity of constant travel and hard work. These words are hard to take for me. I always understood that Americans take pride in work. even glorify it. But be that as it may. I think that we ought to take a serious look at words which proclaim that certain kinds of work are too low for Americans to perform. This is a warning sounded by John Steinbeck. the Nobel Prize winner. when he wrote in "Travels With Charlie": Ive seen many migrant croppicking people about the country: Hindus. Filipinos. Mexicans.
