Session #88 · 1963–65

Speech #880072470

Batista. But now. the evidence seems overwhelming that millions of Cubans are unhappy with what Castro has done. The refugees who fill Miami are not malcontents. idle rich. or traitors to their people. They include the Intellectual. professional. and technical elite of the island. as well as its humblest fishermen. and farmers. More than 250.000 of them have already left Cuba. and another 350.000 have asked and received permission to enter the United States if they can find transportation. (A population drain on the same scale would cost my country seven million citizens. or take from the Soviet Union as many workers as were lost during the Second World War.) The only way these Cubans can express their opposition to Castro is to fleeto vote with their feet--or to enter the desperate life of a guerrilla in the hills.
