Session #88 · 1963–65

Speech #880055561

The League of Nations foundered. thus intensifying the trends leading to the Second World War. In the European power politics of this era. the destinies of smaller nations were determined by the expansionary dreams of ruthless dictators. In 1940. the Baltic nations lost their independence and were absorbed into the Soviet Union. The human cost of Communist land hunger was enormous: 60.000 Estonians. 34.000 Latvians. and 45.000 Lithuanians were either murdered or deported on the charge of political unreliability. Among these unfortunates there were hundreds of children aged less than 1 year. We. the citizens of the free world. should pause and remember the tragic history of the Baltic people.
