Carney is a 318bed general hospital. housed in a complex of new buildings in Dorchester. Mass. The hospitals founder. Andrew Carney. came to America from Ireland in 1794 at the age of 22 and prospered as a tailor and merchant. Following the Irish famines of the early 19th century when a great many impoverished Catholic immigrants arrived in Boston. creating a need for good medical care. Carney decided to build a Catholic hospital. To help establish the hospital he sought the assistance of Sister Ann Alexis of the Daughters of Charity of St.
