Speech #880036715

After the cessation of open hostilities. the fledgling government. led by President Chaim Weizmann. the leader of the World Zionist Movement. and Premier David BenGurion. an important political and labor personage. found itself in dire straits. Much of the industry of Israel had been destroyed during the war. The land. desert in the south and marshes in the north. could not support the population. Above all. the increasing influx of immigrants from Europe and other countries throughout the world were causing grave economic problems which had to be solved immediately. The young nation aided by the United States heroically faced these problems and began to build the most modem state in the Middle East. The Negev. the southern desert. is being developed and will fulfill the dream of Premier BenGurion to make the desert bloom.
