The 1920 peace treaty with the Soviet Union guaranteed the independence of Lithuania. But the Second World War brought with it a new era of national tragedy for the Lithuanian people. Soviet demands in June 1940 for the immediate formation of a friendly government and Soviet military occupation marked the end of a sovereign democratic Lithuania and the beginning of its tragic enslavement by the Communists. The new flood of Russian tyranny resulted in the deportation of thousands of Lithuanian citizens. Since 1945 Lithuania has become a vast Soviet prison camp. Land which had been individually farmed for centuries has been collectivized.
