But in 1939 the Soviet Union ignored its pledge to Lithuania and annexed the entire country into the U.S.S.R. Lithuania was overrun by successive waves of Soviet. German. and in 1944 once again Soviet armies. On the 45th anniversary of their independence. Lithuanians in all parts of the world pay tribute to their fellow countrymen who have been deported to Russia to build up Soviet industries. They reiterate their opposition to the policy of Sovietization. by which the conquerors would erase all memories of the ancient Lithuanian heritage. In this dedication Lithuanians enjoy the support of the entire American people and the whole free world.
