Four of those remaining were taken to Soviet prisons where two were tortured to death. One died soon after his return to Lithuania. The fourth. an old man over 90. is still living but is prohibited from carrying out the duties of his office. Under the occupation. three priests were consecrated as bishops but only one of them is allowed to partially perform his duties. Hundreds of Lithuanian priests were deported to Siberia. where most of them met martyrs deaths. Many churches in Lithuania are either closed. converted into warehouses. museums. or dance halls. The faithful are persecuted for attending charch or for marrying in church.
