I rise to join in the salutes to the people of the country of Lithuania on the occasion of the 45th anniversary celebration of Lithuanian independence. This is a happy occasion. because it brings to mind the years when this Baltic nation. along with its neighboring States of Latvia and Estonia. was a free nation. Each year we in the Congress and Americans of Baltic origin also mark another date. June 14. On that date in 1941. mass deportations began by the Communists. Since then. untold numbers of Lithuanians. Latvians and Estonians have been shipped like so many cattle to serve a foreign master.
