Session #88 · 1963–65

Speech #880009029

I remember specifically when as a Congressman. his constituent. Marian Anderson. one of the greatest voices of all time. was being kept back in her career because of racial prejudice. She -was refused the use of Convention Hall in Washington by one of the patriotic societies. and Jim made a speech on the subject on the floor of Congress chiding them that he was the son of an Irish immigrant and he had to remind these persons. these scions of American patriots. of their responsibilities as citizens. He loved his country. as we know. and as Mr. Horan said. his marriage in 1939 to the beautiful and scholarly Regina Clark. an able lawyer in her own right. gave new direction to his life upward and onward to greater things and to complete fulfillment.
