I believe in peace with justice for the people of the United States and for the people of all the world. The experiment in selfgovernment in this country that has been in progress for the better part of two centuries is on trial. The unique and wonderful manner by which. in the 1700s. a group of colonial immigrants determined that selfgovernment would be fashioned in America constitutes perhaps the most noble experiment in societys attempt to govern itself. Part of the American system. with its theory of checks and balances. provides for an independent judicial branch. The basis upon which this theory of selfgovernment must continue is on the basis of respect for law and order.
