In order to provide for the health. the safety. and the welfare of children. it is necessary that we eliminate the present exemption which permits the employment of children of any age outside of school hours in agri-. culture. Mr. Chairman. this bill was carefully drafted to protect children. particularly very young children. from abuse when employed in farmwork. At the same time it does permit the employment of children in this type of work but under reasonable safeguards. It will not cripple agriculture. but it will help to prevent the unnecessary crippling of children. It is time for Congress to act to protect the children of migrants from exploitation. I urge the adoption of this bill.
