My subcommittee held public hearings in Washington and in New York City in the spring of 1961 to consider four migratory labor bills. During these hearings I was in a position to receive and evaluate much testimony regarding the status of the migratory worker. During the development and consideration of these bills. the staff of my Select Subcommittee on Labor visited migratory work camps to make onthespot observations. In addition. numerous interviews and consultations were held with migrant families. growers. State and local health personnel. and others with firsthand knowledge of the serious problems. including those relating to health. although. of course. the health bill was not specifically before the subcommittee. The evidence we received from this intensive research demands remedial legislation.
