As commander of the illfated Irish Legion. he became a distinct and permanent adornment to Bolivars general staff. although he never fought in a single engagement. Such was the inspiration and charm of his Irish personality. There were other emigrations from Ireland to Argentina and Chile. starting with the Irish missionaries of the 16th century and the military men in the service of the Spanish Government in the 17th century. and yet another influx of farmers and shepherds from the west of Ireland after the great potato famine of 1846. For the latter. the Argentine pampas seemed very much like Ireland. and their farms spread across the country. Also. largely due to their talent is the fame of the Argentinebred horse today.
