From the lumber the people erected shanties 14 feet square and 14 feet high. lined with one thin board and plastered inside. In the winter the settlers suffered from cold and in the summer they sweltered in the heat. Each shanty sold at $150. The refugees chose the Alliance area because it was located on the Jersey Central Railroad. about 100 miles from New York and about 40 miles from Philadelphia. In the early days. in addition to farming. the settlers opened a cigar factory which operated only briefly. and also went into the tailoring of cheap summer coats and vests which proved profitable. Then berries and grapes came into bearing.
