Session #87 · 1961–63

Speech #870216954

I ask my friend from Minnesota not to leave. I will get back to him in a moment. My grandfather was an immigrant to this country from Germany in the 1830s. My grandfather married a girl in Indiana who was part Irish. They then went to California. where my late father was born. That was more than a century ago. My people were among the immigrants who founded the town of Anaheim. Everybody there knew how to pronounce my name. When I went to school in Anaheim. I had no difficulty. My name. although spelled KUCHEL. was pronounced "KEEKEL" because it had an umlaut over it.
