The Constitution of June 5. 1849. was an admirable document. it formalized. for the first time in Danish history. the principle of popular sovereignty. In spite of the introduction in 1866 of another constitution. which represented a step backward. democratic ideals remained alive. and in 1915 a new document was promulgated which permanently abolished the anachronistic system of privileges and established government by popular consent. The Danes were the last Scandinavians to emigrate to America in large numbers. but their later arrival has in no way diminished the value of their contribution to our national life. From the primary port of entry of New York. the Danes rapidly moved West. In Minnesota they established a church settlement in Lincoln County. and a colony of Danish Baptists under Reverend Hague in Freeborn County. Among the many DanishAmericans who have given generously to our Nation of their native talent are the industrialist William Knudsen. the artist Rehling Quistgaard. and the philanthropist Nies Paulsen. The writings of journalist and Danish immigrant Jacob Riis were outstanding contributions toward the accomplishment of social reform in housing. child labor. and recreation. This week we honor Denmark both for the ideals of her constitution and for the value we place on those of her people who live among us. A stanch defender of freedom.
