Session #87 · 1961–63

Speech #870200616

Immediately upon the receipt of news from Taipei that the Nationalist Chinese Government was willing to accept many of the refugees from Hong Kong. But the resolution goes further. and calls for the establishment of a council or conference to deal with the refugee problem. in trying to work out an overall arrangement so that these refugees can receive equitable and humanitarian treatment. The resolution also provides that the United States shall accept 5.000 of these refugees from Hong Kong. I am sure our country will be happy to open its arms to these unhappy refugees from Communist China. So far as my own State is concerned. I am sure it will be most happy to welcome its share of them.
