The story should be spread through the villages of Laos and South Vietnam. where too many free are still apathetic about communism. It should be spread by radio and other media to all the corners of the world where the voice of America can be heard. I would hope also that the impact of the refugee problem in Hong Kong would be felt here in the Congress of the United States. here where there has been consistent refusal to reform our own immigration laws so that we might better help some of these people. Two years ago the distinguished Senator from Hawaii offered an amendment which would have permitted up to 50.000 refugees to enter the United States. This humanitarian measure was passed by the Senate. but. unfortunately. the House of Representatives refused to take it and it was deleted in conference. At present. the Senator from Michigan and myself. with a number of other Senators. have a bill that would also provide a specific 50.000 quota for refugees. These measures are long overdue.
